One of the main concerns RV owners and future RV owners have is safely towing their rig. Fifth wheels are some of the most sought after models on the market today, but their size can be intimidating! Our team at Mountainland RV has a few quick tips for towing a fifth wheel.

1. Double Check Your Weight Limits

The first thing to do as you prepare to move your fifth wheel is to make sure the weight of the RV is not above the towing capacity of your tow vehicle. Fifth wheels use a special coupling system that attaches in the truck bed of a pickup. This makes it easier and more stable to tow, but it can’t weigh more than the truck can handle.

2. Connect the Hitch and Triple Check Everything

You’ll probably have to practice a few times to get good at backing your truck up to the hitch, but after a few tries it will be a breeze! When you connect the tow vehicle to the fifth wheel, remember to use safety chains and double check that everything has been connected properly.

Before you hit the road it’s best to double, maybe even triple check, everything needed to move your fifth wheel. Are your trailer brakes working? Is the pin in place? Are the jacks raised? The small details can be the most important.

3. Give Yourself More Space

When you’re on the road it’s important to be very aware of your surroundings. You’ll need to give yourself more space between vehicles than you do while driving your daily vehicle. When you’re towing a fifth wheel, you’ll need more room to stop, go, and maneuver.

Towing a fifth wheel becomes second nature with practice, but it’s always helpful to go back to the basics. Visit us in Logan, UT, to stock up on the parts you need and speak with a member of our team for more traveling tips. We are proud to serve Cache County.
