Since an RV is like a home and a vehicle all rolled into one, it combines the potential fire risks of both. If something goes wrong with your RV’s fuel system, electrical system, or kitchen facilities, you need to have a plan to deal with it. That’s why the experts at Mountainland RV have created this guide to RV fire safety.

Fire Safety Equipment

Certain pieces of equipment can help you keep yourself and others safe from RV fires. For example, smoke detectors are useful because they let you know if there is a fire in your RV even if it starts in a different room. Don’t forget to test your smoke detectors at least once a month and replace the batteries as needed.

Fire extinguishers are another useful piece of equipment to have. You should place extinguishers in your kitchen, your bedroom, and in a compartment outside your RV. Make sure that everyone in your party knows where the extinguishers are and how to use them. Don’t forget to replace your extinguishers before the manufacturer-recommended date.

Cooking and Fire Safety

Many RV fires start in the kitchen, so take steps to ensure that your kitchen is clear at all times. Combustible materials should be kept away from ignition sources like the stovetop. Turn off all burners before you leave the room, and never leave a burner unattended. It's also important that you don’t let yourself get distracted while cooking. Finally, if you decide to light a campfire or barbeque, do so a safe distance away from your RV.

Electrical Systems

Faulty electrical wiring is another top cause of RV fires. Your RV’s electrical system should be inspected on a regular basis so that worn or broken components can be promptly replaced. You should also take good care of the cord that connects your RV to the power grid and avoid overloading electrical outlets.

Make a Fire Plan

Creating a fire plan will ensure that everyone knows what to do in an emergency. Don’t forget that escape routes can easily become blocked, so you’ll need at least two. It’s also important that you have a predetermined meeting spot to make it easier to figure out who has escaped the RV and who might still be trapped inside. If you are traveling with children, practice the plan with them and make sure that they know not to go back for pets or belongings.
